How to make coffee with a French Press

This is a simple brewing method that involves steeping coffee grounds and then extracting the brewed coffee by plunging a filter down through the brew to remove the grounds from the beverage.

YOU WILL NEED

Kettle, French press, digital kitchen scale, burr grinder, spoon, timer, coffeepot (optional), coffee cups, water, freshly roasted coffee beans

METHOD

  • Fill your French press with hot water and let it stand to preheat.
  • Weigh out enough coffee beans for the size of the French Press you are using and the strength of brew you prefer; a good starting guide is 5 to 7 grams of coffee per 100 grams of water.
  • Grind the coffee coarsely.
  • Bring fresh water to a boil and let cool for 30 seconds to 1 minute until just below boiling point
  • Meanwhile, empty the French Press of the heating water and add your coffee grounds. Place on your kitchen scale and tare or set to zero. Set the timer to 4 minutes.
  • Pour hot water over the top of the coffee in the pot to the required weight. Make sure no dry pockets of coffee remain in the bottom of the pot by giving it a stir, and then start the timer.
  • Place the lid on the press but do not plunge it yet - this will help keep the heat in the pot while the coffee is brewing.
  • After 3 minutes and 45 seconds, take off the lid and use the spoon to scoop the grounds off the top. This will reduce the sediment left in the cup and prevent over extraction.
